Apparently DOJ did research during Clinton special persecutor. They concluded there was no dispositive authority but that the structure of the constitution leads to conclusion no indictment.
Of course once the president leaves office he can be indicted. And a state or local prosecutor can indict.

The official position of the DOJ is that the President cannot be indicted. Nixon wasn't indicted.
