Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas kicked off a series of closed discussions on school safety on Tuesday by promising to discuss gun regulation as one way to stem deadly violence.

The roundtable events follow a school shooting last week that left eight students and two teachers dead in Santa Fe, Texas. The shooting took place just over three months after the shooting in Parkland, Florida, in which 17 were killed.

Abbott, a Republican, said that over three days this week, officials, community leaders and a range of experts would discuss guns, mental health and the relationship between schools and law enforcement.

“The fact of the matter is, this is something where people across the entire philosophical spectrum can come together and reap solutions … whether you are a Republican or a Democrat, whether you are pro-gun or believe in more gun regulation,” Abbott said ahead of the meeting.
