Why are so many people swayed by bombastic, bigoted, chauvinistic leaders?
For some reason, we've recently been hearing a lot of the term "Demagogue" mentioned in the press and on social media, the blogosphere and in political chatter. Any guesses as to why?
As you probably already know, that word refers to someone who may be charismatic and often bombastic, and is able to use his oratorical skills to appeal to the baser, more negative side of people's feelings. Examples of these darker parts of our psyches are prejudice, bigotry suspiciousness, resentment, hate, racism, aggression, rage, violence, retribution, paranoia and ultra-nationalism.
Some well-known demagogues of the past century include Adolph Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Sen. Joseph McCarthy, Huey Long, Benito Mussolini and others. But here's a paradox: The louder these demagogues intoned, the angrier they became, the more hateful their words and the more popular they became. They raged against terrible imminent threats inside and outside the country from evil others who "caused" the misfortunes in society. They were capable of swaying their impassioned audiences to join their vitriolic campaigns against these nefarious targets.

From the article you'd swear this guy was describing Trump, but it was written in 2015. It just so happens Trump checks all the boxes. The sad part is you don't have more people calling this kind of shit out for what it is.
