In reply to the discussion: Alabama Boy Scouts hurled racial slurs and threw rocks at Ethiopian troop member [View all]Jedi Guy
(3,396 posts)The ones who weren't involved should be reassigned to other troops as appropriate and Troop 76 disbanded. The kids who weren't involved, but just had the misfortune to be in the troop with these little assclowns, should be permitted to continue participating in the Scouts, in my opinion. It's unfair to punish the entire group unless the entire group took part in the assault.
Whether he was actively involved or just turned a blind eye, the Scoutmaster should be formally censured by the national organization, stripped of any commendations he's received, and then bounced out of Scouts as well. He was supposed to be acting as a role model for these kids, and he clearly failed miserably. He was also supposed to be supervising these kids, so at the absolute bare minimum he was negligent.
Apart from consequences in the Boy Scouts, the kids who took part in this incident should face criminal charges as appropriate. I'd say assault at the very least, potentially assault with a deadly weapon, since thrown rocks can kill. Then there are potential hate crimes and civil rights issues.
It's beyond depressing that we've reached a place where children are committing assault and hate crimes, but here we are. I don't blame you for feeling pessimistic. But as my dad says, "Where there's life, there's hope of change." Keep your chin up, if not for your own sake, then for your kids, grandkids and new great-grandkid. We'll get through this together, as Americans!
