It's a particularly stupid statement from even someone as stupid as Pence. Yes, I know he's a Koch-bot and a self-lobotomized Evilangelical, but still. He was at least politically aware enough not to screw up his pandering to become elected as Governor of Indiana twice.

I would almost think that it's a message to Putin that he might be willing to carry on if something happened to his "boss".
