In reply to the discussion: Trump Defends Russia: 'I'm Not Pro-Russia,' But They Did Help Us Win Wars [View all]bucolic_frolic
(53,773 posts)Czarist Russia, and later Soviet Union's motives and treaties in both wars were complex. Czarist Russia was undergoing revolution, from Czar to White Russians to the Kerensky government, and despair. Citizens, as they usually do, wanted war to end. Germany permitted Lenin to pass through the war zone and return to Russia on a sealed train. Presumably Germany did this to help defeat Russia. Stalin had treaties with Hitler, but was he hedging Soviet unpreparedness for war, or simply waiting for opportunity? We supplied Stalin's Russia with materiel, it was good for the economy. Stalin waited years for the second front, and suffered major losses of life. I consider this summary painting with a broad brush.
Trump's 'helped us win some wars' is like a pre-school watercolor.
