Germany and Italy had an alliance. Germany had to bail Italy out of a debacle in North Africa.
Hitler always intended to attack Russia, but wanted to take all of Europe before that. He changed his mind because he thought the Russians were preparing to break the NAP and decided to attack first. But Italy screwed up its bit in North Africa and Germany diverted resources to bail them out, setting a bad time table for their Russian offensive. That's why they attacked in late summer and didn't have winter uniforms and other logistical issues (like oil) for their troops.
Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia were ideologically opposed to each other. Though both were authoritarian dictatorships, they came from such different places there is no way they could ever be allies.
