(68,444 posts)The ad spider identifies key words and then throws up ads related to those words. If a page on DU has a lot of references to the Republican Party or Sarah Palin, then ads for them will show up, if they have aything to sell. If, for example, Palin had just put out a new book, you would see all sorts of ads on this page for that book, since her name is mentioned repeatedly on the page.
Since Republicans and their party are mentioned often on any given DU page, ads for those of that ilk who have things to sell--or who are paying the ad company to have advertisements for funds--will show up on those pages.
I don't know which ad company DU uses. I use Googleads on my 10 public sites, and no one asks me about which ads I want. The ads just show up wherever they seem related to the words that are frequently used on a given page.
It can get funny, though. For example, my article titled "America's Sleep Deficit," which deals with widespread sleep deprivation in this country, will sometimes show ads for the Republicans, complaining about "big-spending Democrats" and our out of control budget deficit!
