It's your client's fault for giving him so much work to do.

Classic rule on how to defuse a scandal damage control: Confess everything upfront, right off the bat. Even if you don't think your guilty. You can always back off later and nobody cares as much as about the trying to cover it up. Say you're sorry, try to fix it, and move on.
