10. People with foreign-sounding names should consider changing their names legally

... and I'm cringing at myself for saying this. This is not our parents' good old USA any more, this is the new reality.

My family ancestors emigrated from Germany (a few from Ireland) over 150 years ago. We're all born here going back 5 generations and none of my family has ever had their citizenship questioned or challenged. But we're white and our name sounds German. If we were brown and had a Spanish-sounding last name I'd be dead certain about going to court and changing it to something less Latino. It's got to be a group decision though, and I doubt that any family would have total agreement about something so personal.

Just to put it in perspective: Germans and Eastern Europeans who emigrated to the US 100 years ago were quite ready to have their names anglicized because they faced discrimination if they didn't. I suspect that many Asian immigrants have been doing the same for a long time.

I know you guys are all going to jump on me for this, but I'm saying it's something to consider.
