and again. All I understand from this is that she had a prior felony and was not allowed to vote. Because she voted illegally (even though she wasn't aware it was illegal for a person with a felony on their record to vote), she was given five years in prison.

It is certainly worth discussing, but I sure wish the writer had explained the prior conviction more plainly. The prior and this voting conviction are being conflated it seems.
