an email to their State Tourism Bureau and perhaps the Chamber of Commerce of wherever it was that you intend to visit. If you are on Facebook I would suggest posting on their pages letting them know that you will not be visiting there or spending money. Businesses and organizations such as these watch those pages like hawks in an attempt to keep everything nice and pretty in the social media world.
