(39,737 posts)60. The Meaning Behind Meghan Markle's Baby Photo Dress
Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, and Prince Harry finally introduced the world to their newborn son (who has a name now!) today. And while most people were rightfully focused on baby boy, Meghans dress also made a statement. The sleeveless white dress is by Grace Wales Bonner, who is known for her award-winning menswear, though she makes acclaimed womenswear as well. Wales Bonners London runway show was a favorite of the fashion set last season, and shes one of the coolest up-and-coming designers in fashion at the moment. Another good fashion decision from Meghan.
Wales Bonner studied at Central Saint Martins in London essentially the Harvard of design. Her menswear collections have won many awards, including the Emerging Menswear Designer at the British Fashion Awards, the LVMH Prize, and the LOréal Professional Talent Award for her graduate collection. As a designer who is known for tailoring and relaxed menswear-inspired womenswear, it was a smart choice for the most fashion-forward royal. But theres one more reason that makes this choice especially poignant for Markle. Wales Bonners work often references her bi-racial heritage (her father is Jamaican and her mother is English) and the politics of race. As Markle introduced her newborn to the world, she made a point of subtly acknowledging his (and her own) heritage.

Because "royal progeny with a mixed ethnic background" is more words and too clumsy to say?
