... or if it was more than a civil debt suit that didn't have the account agreement attached (likely because the debt had been sold so many times they lost the data) and could be dismissed per recent state precedent, I would have retained counsel.

Heck, even in the case I was in sometimes it might be worth it to retain counsel, just to soak the debt buyer who filed the idiotic complaint for attorney fees when the case was dismissed.
