Eire Pub, where this occurred is a fixture in South Boston, formerly an almost all-white, Irish neighborhood. It's changed in recent years, but the roots go deep.
While it's nominally Democratic, "Southie" is packed to the brim with Reagan Democrats. They sign up as Democrats to get their jobs on the public tit, but they vote for the conservatives. Southie is the only Boston neighborhood that went for Brown in 2010.
Southie was ground zero for the sometimes violent anti-busing protests in Boston after the schools were ordered to be integrated because of what the court called de-facto segregation.
An iconic photo captures the mood of the protests -- although this one took place in front of city hall and not in Southie.
