The complaint, written by Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms Agent Ronald Young, says Prater has a lengthy criminal history and had previously been declared mentally ill.
Being declared (adjudicated by a court of law) mentally ill bars a person from possessing a firearm.
A subsequent investigation turned up Prater's criminal history, which includes a six-month jail sentence for assault, a short jail sentence for menacing, a 60-day suspended sentence for harassment, a 60-day suspended jail sentence for assault of a family member, a one-year suspended sentence for carrying a concealed deadly weapon and several orders from judges barring Prater from carrying firearms.
The assault on a family member, even if it was a misdemeanor, is sufficient to bar Prater from possessing a firearm for the rest of his life.
The guy is just a criminal, and he broke some more laws when he acquired those weapons.
