From my understanding (and take it with a grain of salt), the stimulus check is a refund on your 2020 taxes (which need to be filed by April 15, 2021) that is being paid out early. Since no one has filed their 2020 taxes, the refund is being calculated on their 2019 taxes. If you haven't filed 2019 taxes yet, then it will be based on your 2018 taxes. If the payment is based on your 2018 taxes and your 2019 taxes would have resulted in a lower payment, the IRS will not require you to pay the money back. Likewise, an increase in income in 2020 will not negatively affect anyone either.
