South Dakota is the worst state in the nation for COVID-19 after a surge in cases during the last week.

The state has reported 2,152 cases in the past seven days, which is 243 cases per 100,000 people. That's the highest amount of cases per 100,in the nation, according to tracking done by the New York Times.

Iowa is second, with 241 cases per 100,000 people over the past seven days and North Dakota is third with 236 cases per 100,000.

The worst of the spread in South Dakota is in Clay County, home of Vermillion and the University of South Dakota, which has reported 205 cases in the past seven days. That's 1,457 cases per 100,000 people, according to the New York Times, and puts Clay as the seventh-worst county in the nation. Wayne, Tennessee is first with 7,071 cases per 100,000 people.
