15. "Long-shot legal effort?"

Not by half. It was a 4th quarter Hail Mary when your team is down by 30. Never had a chance.

I admit, I was a little apprehensive when I thought about how SCOTUS has been tilted so far, but some cooler thinking prevailed.

One of my over-riding thoughts was that, John Roberts, if no one else, knows it would be his legacy, and he has more gravitas and sense of history than this wheezing calliope being pulled around by asthmatic donkeys could pull him towards either party, or Drumpf.

I'm no fan of his, but he has surprised me a couple of times, and I think he, above all others of his stripe, wants to be proud of his place in history. Kavanaugh probably doesn't even understand the concept, because he clearly has no shame (hardly uncommon over there) or sense of propriety and just Doing The Right Thing. He cried over how much he loved beer FCS.

Barrett has the certitude of a True Believer, but she's just waiting to get a crack at Roe v Wade. She has no particular allegiance, other than to her god. I could be wrong, but that's the sense I get.

Alito was a bit of an unknown, but he's come through, shown he understands the law, so I believe I can now put these reservations to bed.

Plus, I think Thomas is feeling old enough now that he's more in Roberts' camp and won't want to further wreck his reputation. Not that that was a problem with the Rs, but that whiff of scandal is never going to go away completely.
