Also there could be a political reasoning behind staying a bit longer. If Kerry is to be named the SOS to follow Clinton, then his Senate seat would be up for grabs and could possibly (hopefully not) go Republican. I could see that jerk Scott Brown running for it when he gets flattened by Warren in November. With Hilary staying a bit longer, that would ease up any concerns on that senate seat while trying to get through various budget and tax legislation prior to next summer.
