(13,466 posts)Texas is consolidating blue districts and expanding red, rural districts with vastly different total numbers per district, thus minimizing minority votes and forcing more Democrats into one district. Manchin and Sinema could have prevented this, but it is most likely too late now. Texas gained two House seats from the 2020 census, so even if a lawsuit eventually forced changes, this new map will likely be used for the 2022 election because the current map does not work for two new seatsthus giving Republicans more seats and most likely the House majority. Other red states are doing the same, so the Biden presidency effectively ends in early January 2023 when the new Congress is sworn in.
We still need to get out the vote, but gerrymandered districts that no longer have to be approved at the federal level after the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act will make it difficult for voters to elect Democrats in this state. Its already hard to get more minorities to vote, and now with gerrymandered districts and new voter restrictions, we may see a decline in voter participation.
It is enormously depressing that Democrats have the power to stop this and refuse to use it! What the hell are we saving the filibuster for when we risk losing power for decades! Republicans will ditch the filibuster the instant they regain power.
