and they still appear to be.

The only color change was an accident. When Vince Lombardi was coach he ordered new jerseys from his brother Harold, who represented a sporting goods company (Harold was gay, BTW). Vince was color blind, and when the jerseys showed up, just before the start of the season, they were closer to red than burgundy. It was too late to reorder, so they repainted the helmets.
