It has long been a principle of Soviet and Russian military doctrine to "go nuclear" if their troops are pushed beyond the Russian border.

My bet is that as Ukraine takes back its territory, it will move artillery as close to the border as possible and strike Russian artillery, supply depots/lines, and troop concentrations within Russia.
