although my feeling is that anyone stupid/evil enough to donate "hundreds of thousands of dollars" to his reelection campaign richly deserves to be fleeced.

If it puts him deeply into debt with fines and restitution (the most likely outcome), that's great. Any jail time would be the cherry on the cupcake.
