It is difficult, if not impossible, to compensate for past evils, but spending some of those holy billions in the indigenous communities for premium education and health care (I know it's Canada) and housing, etc. would go a lot further than "Sorry, we did evil in the past (repeatedly) in the name of the same god we represent now, but look at all the good we do now (not counting covering up thousands of child rapes committed by priests who got relocated to parishes in developing nations where they could rinse and repeat)."
