And to a certain degree the word Liberal. Its still spat out with disdain by Fox and R wing friends, but repeating the word even 10 years ago was like using the word "socialist" today.
Call their bluff.
Being "woke" seems to naturally be an abbreviation of being awake. And yes, its usually about social justices issues.
But I will surmise that those who use that term derogatorily interpret the word as meaning someone who goes, in their minds, way overboard to accommodate others who may have a disadvantage in society because of their minority status. Its about making fun of those individuals that take their beliefs of inclusiveness to, again in their minds, such an extreme high bar, that there is no room for argument. Bill Maher's speciality is harping on the "woke" libs. He thinks it makes him more broad thinking. But he's just falling for another Right wing hit job.
While I understand where Maher is coming from in that we are our own worst enemy sometimes. Human pettiness and resentments etc will rear their heads. Nobody is perfect. I think we do ourselves no good at times. But what is the alternative?
Being AWAKE is not a bad thing no matter if some DO push some things too quick too far for a lot of other people to handle. Every generation SHOULD be more awake to unresolved issues in society from the past. That just seems like natural historical progress
