Today, President Biden said Democrats are likely to come very close but not keep control of the House once all races are called. The president made his prediction during a news conference in Indonesia, where he is attending the Group of 20 summit and met on the sidelines for three hours with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. I absolutely believe there need not be a new cold war, Biden told reporters afterward.
In Washingon, Congress is returning for a lame-duck session while control of the House for the next two years remains unresolved. House and Senate Republicans are scheduled to hold leadership elections this week amid recriminations about why a red wave failed to materialize. Among the issues that could be tackled in the lame-duck session: Ukraine aid, electoral college changes and same-sex marriage. Meanwhile, former president Donald Trump is gearing up for a Tuesday event in Palm Beach, Fla., at which he is expected to announce a 2024 White House bid.
