Biden says Democrats likely to fall short in bid to keep House [View all]

Today, President Biden said Democrats are likely to come “very close” but not keep control of the House once all races are called. The president made his prediction during a news conference in Indonesia, where he is attending the Group of 20 summit and met on the sidelines for three hours with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. “I absolutely believe there need not be a new cold war,” Biden told reporters afterward.

In Washingon, Congress is returning for a lame-duck session while control of the House for the next two years remains unresolved. House and Senate Republicans are scheduled to hold leadership elections this week amid recriminations about why a “red wave” failed to materialize. Among the issues that could be tackled in the lame-duck session: Ukraine aid, electoral college changes and same-sex marriage. Meanwhile, former president Donald Trump is gearing up for a Tuesday event in Palm Beach, Fla., at which he is expected to announce a 2024 White House bid.
