The west can use the incident as an excuse ("escalating? Who? Us? WE'RE not escalating anything. We didn't shoot any deadly missiles into Russia, did we?" ) for a far more massive help package for the Ukrainians now. NATO can even say, "you attacked NATO territory, and you know what THAT means, but we will be very gracious and not attack you back--this time. However, we need to help our Ukrainian friends with what measures that can be put in place to make sure it doesn't happen again. Nothing threatening like atomic weapons, of course. Just a few hundred billion worth of state-of-the-art conventional weaponry, nothing over the top, you understand."
