Theres actually not much for sheriffs departments to enforce.
Its still legal to possess an assault weapon; the ban prohibits the sale of new weapons by Federally licensed firearm dealers who arent going to risk their business and invite legal jeopardy by selling illegal weapons no enforcement necessary.
As for sheriffs offices not checking to see if someone has registered his assault weapon with the state, gunowners have until October 1st of this year to register.
