There’s actually not much for sheriffs’ departments to ‘enforce.’

It’s still legal to possess an assault weapon; the ban prohibits the sale of new weapons by Federally licensed firearm dealers who aren’t going to risk their business and invite legal jeopardy by selling illegal weapons – no ‘enforcement’ necessary.

As for sheriffs’ offices not checking to see if someone has registered his assault weapon with the state, gunowners have until October 1st of this year to register.
