They don't need to be connected to reality, past or present.

But both of these statements are technically correct:

"his mother survived the 9/11 attacks" - anyone not anywhere near those attack points survived.

"his grandparents had fled anti-Jewish persecution in Belgium "

They survived by not being anywhere near the troubles at the time. Brazil was a bit of a safe place at the time.

But George could have stopped the 9/11 attacks, the holocaust, and a lot of other things.

It's just that he was busy at the time, doing open heart surgery in a plane toilet cubicle at 30,000 feet with only a credit card as a tool, and in the other instance, busy setting up a fast food franchise on the Moon.

A very talented man, greatly unappreciated.

He fits in well in the Repug party. And that unfortunately isn't sarcasm.
