I suppose the Kremlin assumed the crew were all staunch loyalists and perhaps they were, but this seems a bit excessive. Polonium tea or novichok after shave would have been Putin's style. This could have been an accident. It could also have been staged to get Prigozhin off the world's radar by faking his death.

Still, the likeliest explanation is that he's dead, Jim.
