With the nation focused on the South Carolina GOP primary, Nevada Democrats drew nearly 12,600 voters to caucuses at high schools, middle schools, community centers, libraries and houses of worship across the state Saturday morning to demonstrate Obama's enduring support among his most loyal followers. The outcome was not in doubt. Only Obama's name was mentioned as a candidate.
Nevada is among a handful of competitive states that could deliver a second term for Obama. He won the state in 2008, but Nevadans twice voted for George W. Bush before that. The state also went for Bill Clinton twice.
"Don't for a second think this election is going to be easy," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid told caucus-goers Saturday at the Cheyenne High School cafeteria in North Las Vegas, a city that suffers from mass foreclosures and is on the verge of bankruptcy.
... In Nevada, the turnout was far short of the record 116,000 caucus-goers that debated between Obama and then Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in 2008. That year, the caucuses benefited from the candidates' political celebrity after they spent weeks crisscrossing the state chasing votes.
