LINCOLN A woman accused of making up a gay hate crime has pleaded no contest and was found guilty.
Charlie Rogers entered the plea Monday afternoon in Lancaster County Court and was found guilty of the misdemeanor charge of false reporting. Lancaster County Judge Gale Pokorny ordered sentencing for Feb. 14.
Rogers, 34, a lesbian, told police last summer that she was attacked by three masked men who broke into her Lincoln home and cut gay slurs into her arms and abdomen. News of the attack prompted supporters to organize rallies in Lincoln and Omaha that drew hundreds of participants.
Although police officials have said none of the physical evidence supports Rogers' version of events, she recently posted a video online in which she maintained her story. She accused police of conducting an incomplete inquiry that focused solely on her from the start.
