I think all of the license plates in a particular state should look the same. That would make it easier for the license plate to do what it is meant to do - identify the vehicle.
The rest of your car is yours to do with as you see fit. Hell, stick a thousand bumper stickers on it if you want to. Knock yourself out! But the license plate and inspection sticker should be uniform IMHO.
