Twenty-seven dead, mostly little kids?
The reason I say you'll never be the same is that I never got over the Chinese Zheng school attack - and guess what - I just googled to give you a link, and there was another today. 23 kids injured at an elementary school in China:

Is it something in the stars?
This day will forever live in you as a back-of-the-mind worry about your students' safety.
I don't know the answer. It's not just guns. There are increasing numbers of attacks by individuals with other weapons, even fire. It's the mind that has the will to destroy, and I don't think normal people can grasp that mind.
Also the fact that it was the father of one of the children in the class makes any theories about protecting against this sort of thing somewhat problematic. Sure, we could put more police on guard in schools, but that wouldn't stop a parent from a class visit. I don't think expecting teachers to teach and be the local SWAT team is at all realistic.
I don't know what to say and I don't know what to think about something like this. It's too shocking and too immense. The worst school massacre I think ever was in the US in 1927, using bombs and gasoline. 45 dead. Perp was a former school board member, I believe.
WHY????? What happens in the human mind that generates this type of wrath and evil?
The first thing that went through my mind when I read that the father was from NJ and 20 years old was that it was a child support dispute, I'm sorry to say. Obviously not the normal type.
