How come it's difficult for people to see it takes training to think of using a gun when you're under fire? They suggest things like doing away with gun free zones and arming teachers (just another thing teachers are expected to do without getting paid, BTW). They seem to think we have to unleash the Clint Eastwood in everyone, and if he's not unleashed already, it must be the government that's getting in his way. No, Dirty Harry wouldn't have let a gun free zone stand in his way.

The statistics on crimes thwarted by guns are not in the millions, or hundred thousands, as progunners have been led to believe. It's actually somewhere in the tens of thousands if even that. And that's usually not returning fire. Soldiers have to train in a unit, with group reinforcement to learn how to hold a position and return fire. And in their first encounter with fire, they'll freeze.

Shooting practice will do nothing to overcome this. For self-defense, guns are a fraud. You're more likely to die of a gunshot wound if you have a gun in the house, as Lanza's mother did. It's hard to justify self-defense when it makes you more likely to die.
