24. Officials say it looked like Gene had fallen. He was in the mudroom, wearing slippers and had his cane.

I'm thinking maybe Besty found him after he fell, realised he was dead, then took her own life in the bathroom with pills. Still doesn't explained the dead dog in the closet.
