It sounds as if Gene never knew his wife and one of his dogs had died.

Plague is endemic in the South. West and it is a bacteria that can be treated with antibiotics

Hantavirus is a virus, while bubonic plague is bacterial. They aren't the same. n/t

Dogs do not transmit hantavirus, nor do they become symptomatic. They can carry in an infected rodent

Yeah, many are speculating that she was only last heard from on the 11th, but died a few days later.

Hackman died they think a week before she did. He must have had severe dementia

No, he died a week after her. Apparently he was not able to care for himself
