As I recall from going to Offshore Technology Conferences in the past, anything that has to remain underwater has to be coated in something to withstand the constant attack from the salt water. I still have some Teflon coated bolts from one of them. Those engines were built to work above the water, so those reservoirs have likely corroded by now.
