(127,285 posts)40. He was best known for his role in the Saturday Night Massacre
In May 1973, AG Elliot Richardson appointed Archibald Cox as a special prosecutor to investigate the 1972 Watergate break-in. and Cox subpoenaed President Nixon for his Oval Office tapes. Nixon responded on Saturday, 20 October 1973, by ordering Richardson to fire Cox, but Richardson resigned instead.
