Without John Roberts' pseudoarguments, the Rehnquist 5 wouldn't themselves have made those arguments up to justify their decision. We'll never know if they'd have decided differently, either. Politically motivated or not, the political consequences of today were beyond their ken at the time.

And no amount of arguing hypotheticals will change the facts of what happened. At least we agree that our party's been on the right side of history and easily more honest than not.
