Right now, he's their martyr to the cause, never mind he was shot by an angry kid with a grudge who shared most of Kirk's horseshit. This was an assassination, not martyrdom by an opposition force and eventually all these garment renders and hand wringers are going to have to come to terms with that. It was more like a family squabble.
