The mother of Karoline Leavitt’s nephew has spoken out against how the administration has characterized her and her relationship to the White House press secretary, saying "why they’re creating this narrative is beyond my wildest imagination.”

In an interview with The Washington Post, published Sunday, Bruna Ferreira called the White House’s depiction of her as an absentee mother “disgusting,” and said she "made a mistake" in trusting Leavitt to be her son's godmother. Newsweek contacted the White House via email on Sunday for comment.

Ferreira’s arrest drew national attention due to her association with Leavitt, a leading figure within the administration and among the most ardent champions of President Donald Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration. Since that time, the White House has depicted the 33-year-old—her relationship with her son, the press secretary and the broader Leavitt family—in a way that sharply contrasts with her own account.

What To Know

Ferreira, who has a child with the White House press secretary's older brother, Michael Leavitt, was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on November 12. Ferreira is a Brazilian national who traveled to the U.S. legally at the age of 6 and previously held Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals status.
