Greene says Johnson 'sidelines' GOP women and 'doesn't take us seriously' [View all]

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) said on Tuesday that Republican women are starting to speak out publicly against Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) because he “sidelines” them and doesn’t follow through on promises to consider their legislation.

In an interview on CNN’s “The Situation Room,” Greene aligned herself with a recent New York Times op-ed by Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), who took aim at Johnson’s leadership style and accused him of marginalizing women in the conference, writing, “Women will never be taken seriously until leadership decides to take us seriously, and I’m no longer holding my breath.”

“I read her op-ed and I thought it was masterfully written, and she’s right,” Greene said. “It is extremely frustrating as a rank-and-file Republican member and in our majority, our Republican majority, that many of us women are not taken seriously, and our legislation is not taken seriously.” Greene pointed to a recent example from her own experience, saying Johnson has yet to follow through on his word to hold a vote on her bill to “protect any child under the age of 18 from gender-affirming care,” which she noted was one of President Trump’s top campaign promises.

“Johnson promised me a vote on it after the shutdown, and it has yet come to the floor,” Greene said. Asked about the potential for more GOP women to publicly break from leadership, Greene said, “Well, you’re seeing it,” adding Johnson “can speak out of one side of his mouth but his actions fully show the hypocrisy.”
