Speaker Johnson's narrow majority will shrink further with Marjorie Taylor Greene's resignation [View all]

Washington CNN - House Speaker Mike Johnson’s narrow majority will shrink a bit further with the resignation this week of Marjorie Taylor Greene, a close ally-turned-critic of President Donald Trump.

Greene announced in November that she would resign from office, with her final day on January 5, a move that stunned some in her party and that followed a falling out with Trump.

With her departure, the partisan breakdown in the House will stand at 219 Republicans and 213 Democrats, with three seats vacant. As a result, Johnson will only be able to lose two Republicans on any party-line vote — needing the near-unanimous support of his party to advance legislation.

The GOP House leader’s majority is poised to contract even more after a special election at the end of the month, when two Democrats will face off in a Texas runoff. A special election for the New Jersey seat held by former Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill, who was recently elected to serve as the state’s next governor, will be held in April.
