SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said Starlink, the companys satellite internet provider, will provide the service free of charge to the people of Venezuela for the next month. Musk reposted a statement from Starlinks account on the social platform X, which Musk owns, announcing the policy shift.
Starlink is providing free broadband service to the people of Venezuela through February 3, ensuring continued connectivity, Starlinks statement said late Saturday.
Shortly after midnight Sunday, Musk reposted the statement, adding, In support of the people of Venezuela, including a Venezuelan flag.
The announcement comes on the heels of the U.S. carrying out a stunning covert operation in Venezuela, capturing President Nicolás Maduro and his wife and flying them back to New York to face charges related to drug trafficking, terrorism and firearms. Maduro is in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., and is expected to make a court appearance Monday at noon.
