A small group of Proud Boys protestors marched to the U.S. Capitol on the fifth anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the building. The group convened by the Ellipse midday Tuesday, later making their way to the west Capitol grounds, The Hills sister network NewsNation reported. Upon making it to the west Capitol grounds, they crafted a memorial honoring rioter Ashli Babbit, who was shot and killed by law enforcement amid the attack on the Capitol, per NewsNation.
Enrique Tarrio, a former leader of the Proud Boys, is one of the organizers of the march. In a post on the social platform X last month, Tarrio said that the march would be PEACEFUL and PATRIOTIC. If you have any intention of causing trouble we ask that you stay home. This event will focus on one thing and one thing only
HER memory, he added, referring to Babbit.
The Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol five years ago left Washington rattled, with discussion of the events of the day still a hot topic in todays politics. Democrats have used the half-decade anniversary to slam President Trump, arguing that he incited the riot. Over 1,500 rioters later received full pardons from Trump, with the president also commuting the sentences of extremist group leaders.
Five years ago today, a violent mob brutally attacked the U.S. Capitol on January 6. Their mission was to overturn a free and fair election. We will never allow extremists to whitewash their treachery, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) said in a post on X Tuesday morning.
