Live: Counterprotesters chase off Jake Lang’s group from downtown Minneapolis

Hundreds of counterprotesters outnumbered the conservative influencer’s supporters protesting Islam on Saturday.

Groups from competing protests confronted each other in downtown Minneapolis Saturday as police tried to keep them separated.

Shoving matches and tug-of-wars over banners broke out among dozens of people surrounded by media along the snow-swept streets near City Hall. Minneapolis police officers and Hennepin County sheriff’s deputies scrambled in the chaotic scene to intervene.

Conservative influencer Jake Lang led a small group of fewer than a dozen people with his “March Against Minnesota Fraud” outside Minneapolis City Hall. A second protest, organized by the People’s Action Coalition Against Trump, drew overwhelmingly more people, who chased Lang to a downtown hotel.

Before the events began, Bob Jacobson, commissioner for the Minnesota Department of Public Safety called for peaceful protests, adding that anyone who breaks the law would be arrested. Meanwhile, downtown and Cedar-Riverside leaders urged caution and restraint.
