FBI taking over Omar attack investigation [View all]

The FBI is taking over the investigation into the attack on Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) at her town hall event on Tuesday, the Minneapolis Police Department confirmed Wednesday. A spokesperson for the department confirmed the FBI would be taking over but did not provide further comment. The FBI also provided confirmation later Wednesday.
“The FBI is investigating this matter. To maintain the integrity of the ongoing investigation, no additional details are available for release at this time,” the FBI National Press Office said in a statement.
Omar was calling for Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to resign or face impeachment over her handling of the recent Minneapolis shootings, when a man stood near the front of the audience and shouted at the congresswoman as he sprayed an unknown substance in Omar’s direction. He was then tackled to the ground.
The Minneapolis Police Department confirmed the man was “immediately arrested” and charged with third-degree assault. In a subsequent statement, police identified the suspect as 55-year-old Anthony Kazmierczak. Minneapolis police officers were already working the event when they “observed a man use a syringe to spray an unknown liquid onto” Omar, who was uninjured and resumed speaking at the event. U.S. Capitol Police on Tuesday night called the incident “an unacceptable decision that will be met with swift justice.”
