The working age population has increased by about 33 million over the past 25 years. That works out to about 110,000 per month, so that is the figure that is currently needed to keep up with population growth. However, in the 25 years prior to that, working age population increased by over 45 million, or about 150,000 per month. So that is where that rule of thumb came from and it was absolutely accurate through about 2010, when population growth began to slow.
